Vaccinated for Your Protection

Recent news about the official end of the pandemic doesn’t mean that COVID-19 is gone. The pandemic will be officially over when COVID becomes endemic and becomes just another virus we will need to deal with on an annual basis like the common cold, which is also a coronavirus, by the way, or the flu. We are all familiar with the yearly flu vaccine and how it is designed to protect people from the newest influenza virus strains projected to be prevalent in the coming year. At some point, the same will likely be true for COVID. Currently, three vaccines are approved for use in the United States, and at least one booster has been approved. In addition, a second booster has been approved and recommended for people over 50 or with other underlying health conditions.

While the recent Omicron variant was good at getting around the vaccine, those who had the vaccine and came down with COVID were experiencing milder symptoms, and the chances of hospitalization were significantly reduced. Recent news has reported on a new subvariant of Omicron, which emerged independently in two countries and had characteristics of last year’s Delta variant. Unfortunately, as many remember, the Delta variant was more serious than Omicron having led to higher rates of hospitalization. The good news, if you can call it that, is that since the new Omicron variant shares some characteristics of Delta, studies have shown that the vaccine is more effective against this new strain than it was against the original Omicron.

We also do this to alleviate the anxiety others may feel with having people they do not know come into their space.
